Alexandra Kilgore DVM
About Alexandra Kilgore
Dr. Alexandra Kilgore grew up in Connecticut with a passion for science and medicine. She earned her degree in biochemistry from Carnegie Mellon University and began her career in immunology and leukemia research before realizing her calling in veterinary medicine. Inspired by her love for animals, nature, and a memorable experience rescuing an owl in the White Mountains, she pursued her veterinary degree at Tufts University, graduating in its inaugural class in 1983.
With extensive experience in avian and exotic animal care, Dr. Kilgore became one of the first veterinarians in New England to perform laparoscopic surgical sexing of birds. She practiced small animal, avian, and exotic medicine at Littleton Animal Hospital for 34 years, served as the Massachusetts liaison to the Association of Avian Veterinarians for 20 years, and coordinated the New England Avian and Exotics Rounds for 10 years. She has published numerous articles and presented at national veterinary conferences.
Dr. Kilgore’s surgical expertise includes avian spays, beak and shell repairs, small mammal dentistry, and advanced procedures for guinea pigs and ferrets. One of her most memorable cases involved removing construction staples and other hardware from the crop and gizzard of a peacock named Peaches, who had a habit of swallowing shiny objects!
Outside of work, Dr. Kilgore enjoys kayaking, snowshoeing, and camping with her husband and their two Irish setters, Brittany and Sulley. She also has a passion for sewing crafts, bird photography (especially hummingbirds), reading, and gardening.
